The Life of Gia Marie Carangi

Hello guyss! I've missed you all! :)

I'm starting the week with a movie. Found it in a stack of old DVDs and I knew Angelina Jolie got an award for her brilliant performance in this movie. The movie is based on an adaptation of the life of a former supermodel in late 1970's. Her name is Gia Marie Carangi, widely known as Gia (with no last name, just Gia). She was one of the very first supermodels who used wild poses, back in the days when models were usually blonde and stick thin. Gia, with chesnut hair and dark look, had inspired many people in the fashion industry. She was the It Girl, the big thing in her era. She was always booked out in jobs and her rise to fame brought her not only glory but tragedy.

The movie started with a scene from Gia's childhood, her parents fighting and her mother leaving. She became a dropout from Philadelphia, moving to New York and working in a restaurant. She was a free independent soul, reckless, wild and impulsive. She started modeling for several designers, as shown in a scene in which she modeled nude with her make up artist, who soon became involved with her in a turbulent relationship. Gia was the only one who dared to move out of the box, posing nude behind a fence while the other models chose to leave the photoshoot.

She became the new face of Vogue and Cosmopolitan, being the favorite of many fashion photographers such as Francesco Scavullo, Richard Avedon and Chris von Wangenheim. However, her personal life was in shambles. She started doing drugs, from cocain to heroin, and she soon became unstable. She left photoshoots, she bailed, she fell asleep during work, and the drug problem became obvious to everyone. Even when she admitted that she was clean after a rehabilitation program, she was yet again caught doing drugs, causing her to lose her career. The death of her former agent and her rocky relationships with her mother and girlfriend were apparently the causes of this.

In 1980s, Gia was diagnosed with AIDS. She died in November 1986.

Many of Gia's photos are very creative. Whenever I watch ANTM, Tyra keeps saying how much models need to think and act out of the box, instead of just sitting pretty. I think Gia Carangi may have greatly influenced and changed the fashion industry. Here are some of her photos:

Angie as Gia (she won a Golden Globe award for this, yay!):

The movie was slightly too long, in my opinion. Angelina Jolie was one of the best actresses to play Gia, but I could not sympathize with her character. However, it was an inspiring (though slightly disturbing) movie. Don't let me discourage you, watch it and let me know what you think! :)
